Spring can be a tricky time of year to know what to wear. Mornings are cold, afternoons are hot and let’s not forget the occasional freak snowstorm in April. Layers are critical for early Spring dressing to adapt to the constantly changing temperatures. To dress your personal best during the early Spring, here are some important rules to remember about color, texture and weight of fabric.

Color-stow your black go-to’s and opt for softer neutrals for Spring. Navy and light grey are great neutrals and will soften and lighten an outfit when the jonquils start to bloom. Put aside the deep intense shades of Fall and Winter (mustard, burgundy, olive, rust) and embrace this year’s pastels. Viva Magenta is the hot color this year and looks great with light grey, navy and cream.

Texture-Put away your velvets, wool, cashmere and bulky knits. Choose finer gauge cotton sweaters, cotton, canvas or tencel jackets. Winter scarves should be stored with cedar or lavender, and instead wear cotton, silk and sheer scarves in lighter and brighter colors of Spring.

Weight-Heavy denim, wool coats, puffer coats and suede boots give way to lightweight denim, cotton jackets and bright colored loafers or driving moccasins.

Here are 5 pieces that can be mixed with your winter/spring wardrobe to keep you comfortable and fashionable while the temperatures fluctuate:

Denim maxi skirt-is a hot spring trend. If you haven’t donned one of these since your school days, rest  assured there are weights and silhouettes that will have you singing their praises. The pluses of a denim skirt is easy care, less wrinkles, and can be worn with boots and a warm scarf on a cold day or sandals or stacked loafers and a sheer blouse on a warm day.

Leather daywear sneakers-This versatile footwear will take you from cold mornings to outdoor lunches in the spring sunshine. White, saddle or bright colored colors are so useful in spring. Chunky retro or sleek and modern is up to you (why not have both). Pro-tip: Keep the sidewalls clean with a Magic Eraser.

Nude heels-a wardrobe basic when paired with Winter attire will give it a softer, upbeat look for Spring. They can even be paired with a black suit to freshen the look.

Fine gauge sweaters in pastels-Embrace the season of pastels by freshening your collection of sweaters with fine gauge ones in blush, fresh green, light blue and navy. Cardigans and shells are classic Spring pieces that round out any wardrobe, and look great with the waist-emphasizing fashions. Not a fan of a sweater shell? Wear it as a vest over your favorite denim or spring patterned button-down shirt.

Light, soft colored jacket-whether you choose anorak or trench (or both) a khaki, pastel or floral jacket will keep you warm but still embrace the emergence of blossoms, leaves and sunny mild days. Easily paired over jeans, skirts or wide-leg trousers.

As the Spring temperatures rise and fall, the earth comes alive with new growth. Embrace the seasonal change by dressing your best in these functional, comfortable, classic pieces in the soft colors of Spring. Happy dressing!
