Fashion Advice Runs in the Family

by Lori Wynne

Fashion advice must run in my family. During the Christmas holiday with my extended family in Colorado, my gladiator-bodied brother and witty sister-in-love gave our brother-in-love a box of new socks in several hues with this humorous advice. My family howled with laughter as my overtly manly brother silently enumerated, nodded and minced over each tip as my brother-in-love read the following rules that were tied to each respective pair of socks.

Classic Black:
Best worn with dark slacks, dress shoes. Never with khakis or light pants; or with white tennis shoes and jeans. This is not an around the house sock.

Earthtone Tan:
Most difficult sock to wear. Never with black anything. Belt, pants, or shoes. Jeans and casual shoes, ok. Never with swimwear.

Low Circulation Brown-Blue:
Very versatile, casual sock. Best worn if feet are sunburned, swollen or sore. Blue or brown anything all day long. Casual or dress. Around the house wear ok with flannel.

Coffee Coffee:
Very dressy and very casual. Never to be worn with khaki pants or a double-pleated, tan pant. OK with jeans. Fine to wear around the house. Never with swimwear.

Mocha (not to be confused with Coffee Coffee):
Casual only. Remember with Mocha, never black and never with cream.

Gunmetal Grey:
Your most functional sock. Everything that Mocha and Coffee Coffee are not. Black, yes. Blue, yes. And even your green jeans, if you have them. If in doubt, Gunmetal Grey. Best worn through security checks.
